USE THE MEDIUM!  It's an age-old adage for filmmakers.

So why do so few films and videos made for the internet actually follow it? Most of the data on the internet is now video, but very few films online use this amazing new medium in any significant way. Once you press 'Play', you might as well be watching regular TV with hiccups.

Yes, the internet is a great method of distribution - for uploading, commenting, linking etc - and most film put up online takes advantage of this. But the defining feature of internet content is that unlike linear media such as books, regular TV and movies - it's interactive. And things are starting to change. A new breed of online film is emerging, in at least three main categories so far...

1) Enhanced films - You interact AROUND the film
2) Personalised films - You interact BEFORE it
3) Interactive - You interact DURING it

...and within the category of Interactive Film we have Interactive Conversation Films; Interactive Exploration Films; and Interactive Music Films. We have Linear Stories with Mini-games. And of course the dreaded Choose Your Own Adventure Stories – which many people assume is all there is to interactive film.

In this talk Martin Percy looks at examples from around the world, covering all these kinds of interactive film and many more. And he’ll take you through a short, simple manifesto for interactive filmmakers, designed to ensure that online film continues to move forward.

Martin Percy is a long-standing director of interactive film. He has won a Webby, 3 Emmy nominations and 2 BAFTA Award nominations. His work has won 8 Webby nominations and 11 Webby honorees.. He has created interactive video pieces for the Tate Gallery, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, British Film Institute and National Theatre, working with people including Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Gordon Ramsay, Julie Walters, Tracey Emin, Jonathan Ross and Malcolm McDowell. See some examples of his work HERE.
