This international seminar delivers practical methods that bring new insight and clarity to the complex tasks of the director and cinematographer. Simon’s ground-breaking techniques give directors their own unique methodology relating specifically to the director’s craft and bring new insight and clarity to the complex task of directing.
This inspirational workshop is built around a series of highly participative practical exercises where Simon Phillips guides participants through the development of emotionally moving storytelling in film. To create a moving story, it is important for the director and camera team to share a common language, the tools and the skills to be able to create not just visually stunning images but ones that crucially create emotion in the audience.

Simon Phillips is a Direction Coach for feature film directors and script development. PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
Preparation work on your shooting script and powerful direction of the camera are vital to engage your audience. Directors need to have the tools and the skills to be able to direct the camera effectively under the pressure of production and yet keep creative ideas fresh and true.
WHO IS THIS SEMINAR FOR?
This is a master class for individual directors and camera-people (cinematographers and camera operators) who have already gained experience in their roles. Participants may be film school graduates, short film experts, and seasoned professional filmmakers who wish to take away a clear set of creative tools to share with their teams.
COURSE CONTENT
Through practical exercises and analysing movie scenes each participant will learn a set of methods to plan camera positions for maximum emotional engagement. Unlike the usual cinematography training courses which concentrate on topics such as lighting, focus, special effects and lab technology; the emphasis here will be on developing a clear set of tools for knowing exactly where to place the camera and when to move it, so you can control the audience’s emotional experience throughout your story. These skills are essential in pre-production but invaluable on set when faced with the changeable reality of your shoot.
